Resources
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) released two resources to assist Medicare providers with billing four new categories of codes classified as Health-Related Social Needs, including peer support services. The Frequently Asked Questions describe certification/training, supervision, consent, and billing requirements for the newly created PIN - Peer Support code. The Medicare Learning Network article provides guidance on the kinds of circumstances and conditions that peer support is a good fit for and how the PIN - Peer Support code may or may not be used together with the general PIN code. The Medicaid Administrator put out guidance to states to grow peer support services. This led to new guidance to states clarifying supervision standards for peer specialists and encouraging states to grow access to peer support through other means. Specifically, the FAQ clarifies the supervision flexibilities, encourages states to expand availability and use of peer support services to serve adults, youth, and families who experience mental illness and/or substance use disorder, including by allowing coverage in emergency room and inpatient settings. CMS encouraged states to ensure that payment rates for peer support services are sufficient to support a living wage for these critical members of the care team.
