Moving Showing: "OC87: the Obsessive Compulsive, Major Depression, Bipolar, Asperger's Movie"
Tuesday, June 2, 7:00pm-9:00pm
Join us on Tuesday evening for a movie showing of a remarkable, award-winning documentary about Buddy, a Philadelphia filmmaker diagnosed with OCD and Aspergers (previously with Major Depression and Bipolar).  This informative (and at times funny) film received positive critical reviews, garnered New York Times "Critics' Choice", and was described by NPR as "a compelling message of hope". The movie charts the ups and downs of Buddy's recovery journey over time. We see how symptoms interfere and dominate his daily routines, the making of this film, and his valued relationships. We watch Buddy navigate these challenges by learning and practicing different self-management techniques, augmented by the support of MH professionals. He interviews a leading clinician about the co-occurring nature of his OCD and Asperger's. We see Buddy travel to Los Angeles, where he tracks down a daytime TV star actor, who shares his personal story of mental health crisis and recovery. Buddy also interviews a San Francisco news anchor who talks about his experience of OCD and how he manages it. Another storyline of the film explores the conflicts experienced by Buddy's parents in response to his disability, as well as resolution and acceptance.  Over time, we see Buddy not only struggle, but also grow in unpredictable ways.

The Creation of Recovery Collages - Arlene Solomon
Wednesday, June 3, 12:20pm - 1:15pm
Storytelling has long been recognized for its therapeutic value in helping people to recover.  By adding the creation of a collage, the benefits are greatly enhanced by providing an avenue for the creation of personal art. This workshop focuses on the “Recovery Stories Through Collage” project developed at Horizon House in partnership with the Delaware Valley Collage Collaborative, a local artists’ group (DVCC).  Members of the DVCC facilitated 10 workshops at mental health facilities where individuals receiving services created collages and then shared their stories with the group.  Come hear how to develop a workshop at your program, the materials needed, and the benefits from this endeavor.  Please view the display of a selection of the collages created during these workshops before attending this event.  The art show is located in the main registration area.
